Timber Knee Rail or Birdsmouth Fencing is a timber-based structure employing the specialised 'birdsmouth' jointing technique. This fencing style commonly comprises horizontal rails supported by vertical posts and is alternatively known as ascot and diamond fencing.
The term 'Knee Rail' alludes to its low-level design, positioned at knee height, offering a demarcation without impeding sightlines. The birdsmouth joint involves a specific notch or cut at the end of timber, precisely fitting onto another piece, usually the post. Its purpose is to establish a robust link between horizontal rails and vertical posts by maximising their surface area contact. The name 'birdsmouth' draws from its resemblance to the open mouth of a baby bird that wants to be fed!
Predominantly, this fencing style employs durable, decay-resistant timber suitable for outdoor installation. Galvanised fixing straps and nails are used to secure the timber posts and rails together. It is generally a dig in type structure.
This fencing type finds application around car parks, pathways, and walkways. Though low enough to step over and lacking in boundary protection, it effectively delineates boundaries, discouraging trespassing on grass or flower beds and regulating designated parking areas. It serves as a cost-effective boundary definition where heightened security isn't imperative, commonly utilised in various public settings.
Please note: Timber knee rails do not meet the specifications for highway use
The 1.2m high Birdsmouth posts offered by First Fence are manufactured from green-treated timber, measuring 1200mm in height and featuring a 100 x 100mm section (a 0.9m high post is also available). These posts are designed for an in-ground installation and will require a minimum of 2 bags of Post Mix per post. It is recommended to site the posts at 1.8m centres and a depth of a half the post height - 600mm
To complete your new Knee Rail fencing setup, First Fence stocks horizontal timber rails and galvanised straps. The 75mm and 100mm top rails will work with both the 0.9m and 1.2m Birdsmouth post. If you select the 100mm top rail, this will create a slight overhang on the post and will need the Bishop's Hat style straps to fix into place. The 75mm top rail can be fixed to the posts with either the V and Shoe style straps.
This timber knee rail fencing is supplied to First Fence by a reputable UK timber saw mill, produced from Norway Spruce and felled predominantly from North Wales (FSC certification is available upon request).
