Timber knee rail fencing refers to a type of structure constructed using timber and employing a particular jointing technique called the 'birdsmouth' joint. This style of fencing typically consists of horizontal rails supported by vertical posts. It is also known as birdsmouth, ascot and diamond fencing.
The term 'Knee Rail' refers to the fact that it is a low-level (knee height) structure that offers a boundary without obstructing views. The birdsmouth joint is a type of notch or cut at the end of a piece of timber to fit securely onto another piece of wood, in this case the post. This joint is designed to ensure a strong and secure connection between the horizontal rails and the vertical posts by maximising the surface area contact between rail and post.
The primary material used in this fencing style is timber, usually wood selected for its durability and resistance to decay as this type of fencing is installed outdoors. The timber posts and rails are fixed together using galvanised straps and galvanised nails, and the posts are cemented into the ground.
Typically used around car parks, along paths and walkways etc, it is low and can be stepped over, so does not give any boundary protection, however it is good for boundary demarcation, discouraging people from walking on grass or flower beds, or to keep cars parking in a designated area only. It is a low-cost way of defining a boundary when security is not needed and is often used in carparks, along walkways and paths and in many other public settings.
