Knee rail fencing, also referred to as birdsmouth fencing, stands out with its unique design that combines horizontal rails connected to vertical posts through notched joints. This classic fencing style serves as an attractive and practical solution for defining boundaries in diverse environments, such as parks, gardens, estates, and public spaces.
The prominent feature of knee rail or birdsmouth fencing lies in its notched joints, where horizontal rails snugly fit into vertical posts. This method creates a sturdy and enduring connection, eliminating the need for extra fasteners or hardware.
For added strength and longevity, knee rails benefit from supplementary support. Fixing straps, crafted from robust materials like metal or heavy-duty plastics, play a crucial role in reinforcing these connections. They effectively fasten the vertical birdsmouth post and the horizontal rail using galvanised nails, ensuring steadfastness and stability in their attachment.
At First Fence, several strap styles are available for use with the birdsmouth post; the V Shaped (once bent) style for the 75mm top rail, the Shoe Style (three times bent) which will also work with the 75mm top rail, and the Bishop's Hat style (five times bent) which is for use with the 100mm top rail only. These straps are made from galvanised steel so are capable of withstanding various weather conditions. Equipped with pre-drilled holes, these straps streamlines the process of affixing it securely with nails.
Please note: Timber knee rails do not meet the specifications for highway use
Prepare the Knee Rails: Ensure the knee rails are clean and devoid of debris that could impede the strapping process.
Positioning: Align the knee rails appropriately, ensuring they meet flush and evenly at the connection point.
Attach the Straight Straps: Place the straight straps over the joint where the knee rails meet, covering the entire width for optimal support.
Securing with Nails: Use nails to firmly secure the straight straps onto the knee rails, leveraging pre-drilled holes for uniform support.
Check Stability: Test the joint's stability by gently applying pressure, ensuring there's no excessive movement or looseness. The straps should effectively hold the knee rails together.
The use of straight straps to reinforce knee rails adds an extra layer of durability and stability. Choosing high-quality materials and adhering to proper installation methods ensures a robust and long-lasting connection between the knee rails.
