Knee rail fencing, which is also known as birdsmouth, diamond or ascot fencing, has a unique design featuring horizontal rails connected to vertical posts through notched joints. This classic fencing style provides an aesthetically pleasing and practical solution for demarcation and boundary needs in diverse environments such as parks, gardens, estates, and public spaces.
The distinctive feature of knee rail fencing lies in its notched joints, where horizontal rails securely slot into vertical posts, creating a robust connection without the necessity for additional fasteners or hardware.
To enhance the longevity of knee rails, additional reinforcement is recommended. Fixing straps, typically crafted from durable materials like metal or heavy-duty plastics, play a crucial role in this reinforcement. These straps secure the upright birdsmouth post and the horizontal rail together using galvanised nails, offering stability and support to ensure a steadfast connection.
The system consists of top rails, birdsmouth posts and fixing straps, all of which are available to purchase from First Fence.
Please note: Timber knee rails do not meet the specifications for highway use
Here's a step-by-step guide on using straight straps to connect knee rails:
Prepare the Knee Rails: Ensure the knee rails to be joined are clean and free from debris or obstacles.
Positioning: Decide on the alignment of the knee rails, ensuring they are flush and even at the connecting point.
Attach the Straps: Place the straight straps over the joint where the knee rails meet, ensuring they cover the entire width for optimal support.
Securing with Nails: Use nails to secure the straight straps onto the knee rails, utilising the pre-drilled holes for uniform support. The V strap requires 8 nails and the Shoe and Bishop's Hat style 12 nails per strap.
Check Stability: After securing the straight straps, assess the stability of the joint by applying gentle pressure. Confirm that there is no excessive movement or looseness in the connection, as the straps should firmly hold the knee rails together.
First Fence offers a comprehensive range of knee rail fencing products, including 75x75mm and 100x100mm top rails in both 1.8m and 3.6m lengths, 0.9m and 1.2m birdsmouth posts, and a choice of fixing straps.
