Timber Knee Rail Fencing represents a sturdy structure crafted from timber, employing the 'birdsmouth' jointing technique. This fencing style is characterised by securely positioned horizontal rails supported by vertical posts, also recognised as birdsmouth, ascot, or diamond fencing within the industry.
Please note: Timber knee rails do not meet the specifications for highway use
The term 'Knee Rail' derives from its design strategically placed at a low height around knee level, serving to demarcate without obscuring sightlines. The birdsmouth joint, a precise notch at the end of the timber snugly fitting onto the post, significantly enhances structural integrity by maximising the contact area between the horizontal rails and the vertical posts. Its name draws inspiration from its resemblance to the open mouth of a hungry baby bird awaiting food.
Constructed primarily from durable, decay-resistant timber, this fencing style is well-suited for outdoor installations. The Knee Rail system comprises top rails, birdsmouth posts, and assembly involves the use of galvanised straps, available in V and Shoe shapes, or 'Bishop's Hat' styles, along with nails, ensuring a secure and enduring connection between the timber posts and rails. This follows a dig-in format.
The versatility of Knee Rail Fencing allows for application in various settings such as car parks, pathways, and walkways. Despite being easy to step over, it efficiently defines boundaries, discourages trespassing on grass or flower beds, and manages designated parking spaces. Its cost-effectiveness makes it ideal for public settings where stringent security measures are not paramount.
First Fence offers 3.6m long timber top rails specifically crafted for knee rail fencing. Constructed from Tanalith E Green-treated timber, these top rails measure 3600mm in length and feature a 75 x 75mm section. A 100 x 100mm version is also available, and both are also offered in a 1.8m length, along with premium knee rail fencing straps and birdsmouth posts designed for this style of fencing. The posts undergo thorough pressure treatment with Tanalith E Green, a copper-based biocide product ideal for environmentally sensitive applications. When exposed to the outdoors, the initially pale green timber gracefully transitions into a beautiful honey colour before settling into a silvery grey hue. This timber knee rail fencing is supplied to First Fence by a reputable UK timber saw mill, produced from Norway Spruce and felled predominantly from North Wales (FSC certification is available upon request).
Designed for in-ground installation, these posts require Post Mix to ensure stability and durability. The recommendation is to install the posts at 1.8m post centre intervals, considering Knee Rail Fencing is typically 450 or 600mm high, requiring digging half the length of the post into the ground. A minimum of 2 bags of post mix per post are suggested.
When choosing your fixings, please note that the Bishop's Hat style strap is suitable for the 100 x 100mm top rail due to the overhang on the Birdsmouth post, while the 75 x 75mm top rail requires the V shape or Shoe shape straps. Galvanised nails are available for attaching the strap to the post.
While the timber posts undergo initial treatment, additional wood treatment, especially on the ends, is recommended to enhance resilience and prolong their lifespan.
