When undertaking any excavation work for essential services it is important to ensure the safety of pedestrians and workers so using Trench Covers and Road Plates to cover the trench is highly recommended.
The Oxford LowPro Trench Cover is a highly utilised product due to its robust durability, however it can pose problems for wheelchair users and pushchairs and this is where accessibility ramps and infill strips come into their own. The Infill Strip safely connects multiple Trench Covers to each other to stop them drifting apart and the ramps have a gentle 1:12 gradient for a smooth slope for pedestrians and vehicles.
The Ramps are available in a Short Side, Long Side and Corner format. The Short Side Ramp is made from Thermoplastic Elastomer which combines the qualities of rubber with the ease of processing and recyclability of plastic. It measures 990mm x 645mm and can be attached to the short sides of the LowPro. Each Ramp comes with the appropriate Connector Plate and Bolts.
Ramp installation is relatively straightforward however a risk assessment should be carried out to ensure the product is suitable. The ramps should not be placed over the trench itself. Once the LowPro Trench Covers are fixed together with Infill Strips, place the ramps onto the studs on the covers and fix with the bolts. For ramps on all sides of the Trench Cover use the 4-way connector at the corners. In this case the Long Ramp corner will need to be cut with a knife to fit up against the Short Ramp (a mark is on the ramp to show where to cut, see Installation Guide in Downloads section for full details).
