With World Environment Day approaching on 5th June, we created a checklist to help you make the best decision when it comes to environmentally friendly fencing. Evaluate your existing fencing and gates against our checklist, or use it to help you choose your new system.
Many factors will contribute to how eco-friendly your fencing is. This can range from how the material is sourced and manufactured to how the fencing is treated and where it is installed.
The materials used in your fencing and gates should be responsibly sourced before the manufacturing process begins. For example, timber sourced from the Baltic region, which allows the trees to grow slowly, without using chemicals to speed up the growth process. By comparison, timber farms that use harmful chemicals and damage the soil are less responsible for the local environment
Our range of Tanalised UC4 cundy peel turner posts fits the bill. Explore the range here.
The manufacturing process could potentially involve harmful chemicals, high temperatures, and wasted materials. While traditionally welded joints can require more energy and material, going for a reduced weld railing could combat that.
Our range of EnviroRail® railings and gates is ideal for residential and public areas looking for classic railings with reduced welds.
Weathering can cause fencing and gates to work less effectively, need replacing, or cause damage to the setting if they break. Proper weatherproofing can help ensure a long life and sturdy structure. Systems that utilise galvanised steel with a Polyester Powder Coating (PPC) are corrosion and rust-resistant, helping them achieve a longer lifespan.
Modular fencing and gates should have replaceable and repairable components, meaning a new system doesn’t need to be installed every time a post or railing fails. This not only reduces costs for repairs and maintenance but also means nothing new needs to be sourced, manufactured, or installed.
If a composite fencing needs maintenance, for example, individual boards can be replaced if damaged.
Wildlife can become tangled in fencing or stuck trying to jump over gates. The right fencing should blend in with the surrounding area and not be an unattractive structure, but also not disturb or injure wildlife.
Our recycled plastic knee rail suits this need; not only is it made from a recycled plastic that does not cause damage to the soil, but it can also be easily avoided by wildlife.
