Timber Knee Rail Fencing is a sturdy structure crafted from timber using the 'birdsmouth' jointing technique. This fencing style features horizontal rails securely supported by vertical posts, also known in the industry as birdsmouth, ascot, or diamond fencing.
Please note: Timber knee rails do not meet the specifications for highway use
The term 'Knee Rail' originates from its design, strategically placed at a low height around knee level, marking boundaries without obstructing sightlines. The birdsmouth joint, a precise notch at the end of the timber fitting onto the post, significantly reinforces structural integrity by maximising contact between horizontal rails and vertical posts. Its name is derived from its resemblance to a hungry baby bird's open mouth awaiting food.
This fencing style primarily uses durable, decay-resistant timber, making it ideal for outdoor installations. The Timber Knee rail system consists of top rails, birdsmouth posts, and assembly involves galvanised straps (available in V style, Shoe style or 'Bishop's Hat' style) and nails, ensuring a secure and durable connection between timber posts and rails. The installation process involves digging into the ground.
The versatility of Knee Rail Fencing allows its application in various settings like car parks, pathways, and walkways. While easily stepped over, it effectively defines boundaries, discourages trespassing on grass or flower beds, and manages designated parking spaces. Its cost-effectiveness makes it suitable for public areas where high-level security isn't a priority.
First Fence offers 1.8m long timber top rails specifically designed for knee rail fencing. Crafted from Tanalith E Green-treated timber, these top rails measure 1800mm in length and have a 100 x 100mm section. A smaller 75 x 75mm version is also available, along with premium knee rail fencing straps and birdsmouth posts tailored for this fencing style. The top rail is also available in a 3.6m length. The posts undergo thorough pressure treatment with Tanalith E Green, an environmentally suitable copper-based biocide product. When exposed to the elements, the timber transitions from a pale green to a honey color, eventually turning into a silvery grey hue. This timber knee rail fencing is supplied to First Fence by a reputable UK timber saw mill, produced from Norway Spruce and felled predominantly from North Wales (FSC certification is available upon request).
Designed for in-ground installation, these posts require Post Mix for stability and durability, with a recommended installation interval of 1.8m post centre to post centre. With Knee Rail Fencing typically at 450 or 600mm high, the suggestion is to dig half the post length into the ground, recommending a minimum of 1.5 bags of post mix per post.
The Bishop's Hat style strap suits the 100 x 100mm top rail due to an overhang on the Birdsmouth post, whereas the 75 x 75mm top rail requires straight straps.
While the timber posts receive initial treatment, additional wood treatment, especially on the ends, is advisable to enhance resilience and extend their lifespan.
