Shims are also known as packers, spacers or foils and are thin, often tapered, pieces of material that are used in the construction industry to fill in gaps between objects and support, adjust or provide a level surface. In this industry, precision is crucial so these are actually a very important tool.
They can be made from a variety of materials including wood, plastic, and metal, and are also made on site on an ad-hoc basis from any material to hand. They can be solid or have a horseshoe shape to fit around bolts. Horseshoe shims are also known as trouser shims as they look similar to the legs on a pair of trousers. Shims can be stacked if the gap is more than the depth of one shim, makes sure everything is bolted and secure when doing this.
While making your own improvised shims on site and from anything you have handy is ingenious, why not use a product designed for the job from the outset?
First Fence has a range of sizes to choose from. A solid square format with the choice of a horseshoe cut-out that will fit around an M16 or M20 bolt is available in a range of depths; 1mm, 2mm and 5mm.
