Product Description

Pedestrian Guardrail Kit - PG1 BS 7818 - 1.0m Wide

PG1 pedestrian guardrails are safety barriers designed to guide pedestrians and block access to dangerous areas. They are built to meet the British Standard BS 7818:1995, which outlines the specifications for metal roadside pedestrian restraints. This standard guarantees that the guardrails are structurally sound, durable, and safe for public use. Furthermore, it mandates that they must not obstruct visibility, break apart on impact, or create new hazards for anyone using the road or highway.

What style to choose?

First Fence supplies two styles of pedestrian guard rail barriers, with the main difference between PG1 and PG2 being their infill design.

The PG1 guard rails have vertical infill bars running from the top to the bottom of each panel. This design provides clear visibility, making it well-suited for general pedestrian safety and for directing foot traffic.

PG2 guard rails use the same vertical infill bars but include an open sight panel, 200mm deep, running across the full width at the top. This design helps minimise visual obstruction for drivers, improving their ability to spot pedestrians, particularly small children. By enhancing visibility and hazard awareness, PG2 ensures children are more easily seen. When installed at a school entrance, the barrier provides an added layer of safety by preventing children from running straight onto the road.

Staggered versions are also available. In these designs, the infill bars are offset between the front and back of the panels, creating an alternating pattern when viewed head-on. This staggered arrangement enhances visibility for drivers, making it easier to see through the barrier.

The Pedestrian Guardrail Kit from First Fence

First Fence supplies the PG1 pedestrian guard rails in kit form, available in 0.5m, 1.0m, and 2.0m lengths. Kits can be configured with a standard infill or with single, double, or triple staggered options. You can choose a galvanised finish or a PPC coating in a wide range of RAL colours. Designed as a dig-in system, installation requires a post mix to ensure a secure and durable fit.

Key Features of the 1.0m Wide Guardrail Kit

  • Infill bars measuring 12mm in diameter set at 110mm centres. (The PG1 rail has a full-length infill bar.)
  • 50 x 30 mm rectangular hollow section (RHS) frame.
  • Installed height of 1.0m with 50mm ground clearance.
  • No sharp edges or protrusions, with a smooth finish that is required for pedestrian safety.
  • Made from hot-dip galvanised steel to BS EN ISO 1461 standards.
  • Root fixed format.   The rail should be buried 400mm into the ground.
  • Comes with M10 x 75mm full thread hexagon bolt (stainless steel), M10 hexagon locking nut (nylon) and M10 x 20mm Form A flat washers (stainless steel).

Applications

This type of guard rail is well-suited for protecting pedestrians and guiding foot traffic along pavements, helping to discourage unsafe crossings. They are particularly effective in school areas for creating a secure boundary between children and nearby traffic, with PG2 offering additional benefits in these settings. Guard rails can also be installed near bus stops to prevent sudden crossings when passengers board or exit, and on bridges or overpasses to stop pedestrians from stepping into live traffic. They are equally effective alongside fast roads, serving as a strong deterrent against dangerous crossings.
