Product Description

Pedestrian Guard Rail Kit with Visibility Gap - PG2 BS 7818 - 1.0m Wide

PG2 pedestrian guardrails are safety barriers engineered to protect people on foot by delineating walkways and preventing access to hazardous areas. Manufactured in compliance with British Standard BS 7818:1995, they meet the specific requirements for metal pedestrian barriers on public highways. This standard ensures the guardrails are structurally robust, durable, and safe for use in urban and roadside environments. Key requirements also dictate that they maintain clear lines of sight, withstand impacts without detaching, and avoid creating additional dangers for road users.

What style to choose?

First Fence offers two styles of pedestrian guardrails, PG1 and PG2, which are distinguished primarily by the design of their infill panels.

PG1 pedestrian guardrails feature vertical infill bars that extend the full height of the panel. This design provides excellent visibility, making it ideal for general pedestrian safety and for directing foot traffic.

PG2 guardrails are constructed with the same vertical infill bars as the standard model but incorporate a key safety enhancement: a 200mm deep visibility gap running horizontally across the top of the panel. This open 'sight strip' is specifically designed to reduce visual obstruction for motorists, significantly improving their view of smaller pedestrians, especially children. By enhancing driver hazard awareness, PG2 guardrails are the ideal choice for locations like school entrances, where they provide a protective barrier to prevent children from running directly onto the road.

Staggered versions are available too.  The staggering refers to the arrangement of the infill bars, which improves visibility for drivers.  The vertical infill bars are offset or staggered between the front and back of the panels; this creates an alternating pattern when viewed head-on.

The Pedestrian Guard Rail Kit from First Fence

First Fence offers PG2 pedestrian guardrails in easy-to-install kit form, with standard lengths of 0.5m, 1.0m, and 2.0m. A range of infill designs are available, including the standard layout as well as single, double, or triple staggered configurations. To suit your project's aesthetic, you can choose a galvanised finish for durability or a powder-coated finish in a wide selection of RAL colours. These guardrails are designed as a dig-in system, requiring post mix to ensure a secure and permanent installation.

Key Features of the 1.0m Wide Guard Rail Kit

  • Infill bars measuring 12mm in diameter set at 110mm centres.  (The PG2 rail has a sight panel at the top.)
  • 50 x 30 mm rectangular hollow section (RHS) frame.
  • Installed height of 1.0m with 50mm ground clearance.
  • No sharp edges or protrusions, with a smooth finish that is required for pedestrian safety.
  • Made from hot-dip galvanised steel to BS EN ISO 1461 standards.
  • Root fixed format.   The rail should be buried 400mm into the ground.
  • Comes with M10 x 75mm full thread hexagon bolt (stainless steel), M10 hexagon locking nut (nylon) and M10 x 20mm Form A flat washers (stainless steel).

Applications

This type of guardrail is designed to protect pedestrians and manage foot traffic along pavements, reducing the risk of unsafe crossings. They are highly effective in school zones, where they provide a secure barrier between children and passing vehicles, with PG2 offering enhanced safety benefits in these areas. Guardrails are also useful near bus stops to prevent sudden crossings when passengers get on or off, and on bridges or overpasses to stop pedestrians from stepping into traffic lanes. In addition, they are well-suited for installation along high-speed roads, serving as a strong deterrent against hazardous crossings.
