Product Description

Pedestrian Guard Rail Kit with Visibility Gap - PG2 BS 7818 - 0.5m Wide

PG2 pedestrian guardrails are protective barriers designed to safeguard pedestrians by defining safe walking routes and restricting access to dangerous zones. They are manufactured in accordance with British Standard BS 7818:1995, which sets out the specifications for metal pedestrian restraint systems used on roads and highways.

The BS 7818 standard ensures that pedestrian guardrails are strong, long-lasting, and safe for public use in both roadside and urban settings. In addition, they are designed to maintain visibility, remain securely in place under impact, and minimise potential hazards to road users.

What style to choose?

First Fence provides two types of these guardrail barriers, with the primary difference between PG1 and PG2 pedestrian guardrails being the design of their infill panels.

PG1 pedestrian guardrails feature vertical infill bars that extend the full height of the panel. This design provides excellent visibility, making it ideal for general pedestrian safety and for directing foot traffic.

PG2 guardrails share the same vertical infill bars but include a 200mm deep open sight strip running across the full width at the top of the panel. This design reduces visual obstruction for drivers, particularly improving the visibility of small children and pedestrians. PG2 guardrails enhance hazard awareness for motorists, allowing smaller pedestrians to be seen more easily. When installed at locations such as school entrances, they act as a protective barrier that prevents children from running directly into the roadway.

Staggered versions are available too.  The staggering refers to the arrangement of the infill bars, which improves visibility for drivers.  The vertical infill bars are offset or staggered between the front and back of the panels; this creates an alternating pattern when viewed head-on.

The Pedestrian Guard Rail Kit from First Fence

First Fence supplies PG2 pedestrian guardrails in convenient kit form, available in 0.5m, 1.0m, and 2.0m lengths. Customers can choose between standard infill or single, double, and triple staggered configurations. Finishes include galvanised or powder coating in a variety of RAL colours. This dig-in system requires post mix to ensure a secure and stable installation.

Key Features of the 0.5m Wide Guard Rail Kit

  • Infill bars measuring 12mm in diameter set at 110mm centres.  (The PG2 rail has a sight panel at the top.)
  • 50 x 30 mm rectangular hollow section (RHS) frame.
  • Installed height of 1.0m with 50mm ground clearance.
  • No sharp edges or protrusions, with a smooth finish that is required for pedestrian safety.
  • Made from hot-dip galvanised steel to BS EN ISO 1461 standards.
  • Root fixed format.   The rail should be buried 400mm into the ground.
  • Comes with M10 x 75mm full thread hexagon bolt (stainless steel), M10 hexagon locking nut (nylon) and M10 x 20mm Form A flat washers (stainless steel).

Applications

This type of guardrail is ideal for protecting pedestrians and guiding foot traffic along pavements, helping to discourage unsafe crossings. They are especially effective in school zones, creating a safe barrier between children and traffic (with PG2 being particularly beneficial in these settings). Guardrails can also be installed near bus stops to prevent sudden road crossings when passengers board or exit buses, and on bridges or overpasses to stop pedestrians from stepping into traffic lanes. Additionally, they are well-suited for placement alongside high-speed roads to deter unsafe crossings.
