Palisade Fencing: Where Can It Go?

Palisade Fencing: Where Can It Go?
Palisade fencing is one of the most established and reliable forms of permanent security fencing available. Known for its strength, durability, and unmistakable appearance, it is widely used to protect sites that require a high level of security. Constructed from steel and designed to deter intrusion, palisade fencing provides both physical protection and a strong visual deterrent.

Installed around the perimeter of a site, palisade fencing helps keep premises secure at all times. Its robust construction, combined with its imposing design, makes it an effective solution for preventing unauthorised access and theft. In addition to security, palisade fencing also functions as a clear boundary marker, which can be further enhanced with a polyester powder-coated finish for added visibility and longevity.

The History of Palisade

Palisade, also known as stakewall or paling, takes its name from the Latin word pālus and has been visible in history across many civilisations since Ancient Greek and Roman times.

During this era, it would have been created with long wooden stake pikes and used to defend fortresses and military bases, as it was difficult to climb. This structure would require a lot of strength and determination to traverse, and if someone reached the top, they would have to negotiate a sharp point before being confronted by soldiers.

Nowadays, Palisade is typically made from steel and is still used to protect secure properties.

The Benefits of Palisade Fencing and Gates

Palisade fencing is designed for long-term installation and performs exceptionally well in a variety of outdoor environments.

  • Flexible Installation Options: Palisade fencing can be installed on hard ground, such as concrete, using steel bolt-down posts, or on softer ground, including grass and soil, with dig-in posts set securely into the ground.
  • Suitable for Sloping Ground: Thanks to its self-raking design, palisade fencing can be installed on sloping ground with gradients of up to 30 degrees. Panels can be assembled to follow the natural line of the ground without the need for stepping, ensuring a neat and secure finish.
  • Adaptable Access Control: To meet site access requirements, Palisade fencing systems can be fitted with pedestrian and vehicle access gates. Gates are available in heights from 1.8m to 3.0m and widths ranging from 1.2m to 10.0m, providing controlled entry points that can be locked to maintain security at all times.
  • Built for Longevity: All palisade fencing and gates are manufactured from cold-rolled steel and galvanised with a protective zinc coating to prevent corrosion. This finish complies with the BS EN ISO 1461:2009 standard, helping to ensure long-term performance in outdoor conditions.

Where Can Palisade Fencing Be Installed?

Due to its strength and deterrent qualities, palisade fencing is commonly installed in locations where security is a priority, including:

  • Industrial and commercial premises
  • Warehouses and distribution centres
  • Utilities and infrastructure sites
  • Schools and educational facilities
  • Retail parks and business estates
  • Railways and transport depots
  • Storage compounds and high-value asset areas

Its ability to adapt to different ground types and gradients makes it a versatile solution for both urban and rural environments.

Where has First Fence installed Palisade?

Over the years, we have installed and seen our customers install Palisade in several types of properties. For example:

  1. Under a bridge in Bristol to deter vandalism
  2. Security for a business in Cambridgeshire

  10. A gym in Derbyshire

These are just some of the typical uses for palisade fencing and gates, and the type of security they offer. Take a look at our case studies for more inspiration for your next project.

What Makes Palisade Fencing So Secure?

Several design and manufacturing features contribute to the high security performance of palisade fencing.

Cold-Rolled Steel Construction

Palisade fencing is manufactured using a cold rolling process, where steel is shaped at room temperature using a series of rollers. This method produces steel that is lighter in weight without compromising strength, resulting in a strong yet efficient security solution.

Galvanised and Optional Powder-Coated Finish

The galvanised coating protects the steel from rust and corrosion, while an optional polyester powder coating further enhances durability and provides a clean, professional appearance.

‘W’ Section Steel Pales

Our palisade fencing is supplied with ‘W’ section steel pales as standard. These feature a thinner centre and thicker, inward-curving edges, increasing strength while making the fencing difficult to grip or climb. Palisade fencing is available in heights from 1.8m to 3.0m, with a range of pale styles including triple-pointed, single-pointed, round, and notched pales.

Rails and Anti-Climb Features

Each palisade fencing system includes a top and bottom steel rail, with the top rail incorporating barbs that further deter climbing attempts.

Anti-Tamper Fixings

Palisade fencing is installed using specialist anti-tamper fixings. Once secured, the top section of the nut snaps off, preventing bolts from being removed or interfered with after installation.
