Recycled Plastic Fencing Explained
There is a lot to know about recycled plastic fencing: how it is made, where it can be installed, and what types are available. First Fence takes a closer look at the importance of recycled plastic fencing.

An Environmentally Friendly Solution

Recycled plastic fencing offers a sustainable, long-lasting solution compared to conventional timber or metal options. Manufactured entirely from repurposed plastics, it delivers impressive strength and durability while reducing environmental impact.

Available in a variety of designs to suit different settings, it’s a practical choice for residential, commercial, and public spaces alike. Unlike traditional materials, recycled plastic doesn’t rot, rust, or attract insects, and it stands up to harsh weather and UV exposure with very little upkeep required.

How Recycled Plastic Fencing Is Made

Every Plaswood profile starts its life at our Dumfries recycling and remanufacturing plant, where plastic waste is transformed into durable, long-lasting fencing material.

  1. Arrival & Sorting: Plastic waste is delivered and inspected to ensure it meets our quality requirements.
  2. Shredding & Washing: Approved plastics are shredded, then thoroughly washed to remove contaminants and odours. We recycle our wash water, cutting water use by around 90% compared to virgin plastic production.
  3. Drying & Quality Control: The clean plastic flake is dried and checked again for consistency.
  4. Melting & Blending: The material is melted and blended to achieve the exact strength and durability needed for Plaswood products.
  5. Extrusion & Cooling: The molten blend is extruded into Plaswood profiles and cooled, with cooling time varying by profile size.
  6. Final Testing: Each profile undergoes rigorous technical testing before it’s approved for use.
  7. The Result: High-performance, fully recycled Plaswood profiles ready for a wide range of fencing applications, including knee rail, post and rail, mortised post and rail, picket fencing, and closed-board systems.

Types of Recycled Plastic Fencing

Recycled Plastic Knee Rail

Our recycled plastic knee rails provide an effective low-level barrier for parks, gardens, car parks, and public areas. They help define boundaries and deter vehicles while preserving clear sightlines, making them ideal where safety and visibility both matter. Available in 0.9 m and 1.2 m heights, they come as complete kits or individual components.

Recycled Plastic Post and Rail Fencing

Crafted from recycled plastic, this traditional post and rail style offers a natural, rural look suited to farms, equestrian environments, and domestic properties. Horizontal rails lock into vertical posts to create a strong, open boundary. Unlike timber, recycled plastic won’t rot or weather, making it perfectly suited to exposed countryside locations.

Mortised Post and Rail Fencing

For enhanced strength, our mortised post and rail system features rails that slot neatly into pre-formed openings in each post, creating a clean, secure fit. Fencing bays are available in 1.2 m and 1.5 m heights, and all parts are sold individually so you can replace or expand sections as required.

Recycled Plastic Picket Pale Fencing

Offering the timeless appeal of classic picket fencing, this option uses vertical pales to create welcoming boundaries around gardens and pathways. Made from recycled plastic, it maintains its colour and structure without rotting, fading, or frequent maintenance. Our online calculator helps you determine the exact components needed for a 1.2 m picket panel system.

Recycled Plastic Closed Board Fencing

If privacy and security are priorities, our recycled plastic closed board fencing delivers a solid, wind-resistant barrier with tightly fitted vertical boards. It’s a popular choice for homes but also performs well in commercial and public settings. Bays are available in 1.2 m, 1.5 m, and 1.8 m heights, with all components sold separately for easy repairs or extensions.
