Agriculture Fencing: Keeping Santa’s Reindeer Safe

In this guide, we'll explore how to create a secure reindeer enclosure using sturdy timber posts and wire fencing, helping you provide a safe and comfortable environment for Santa's reindeer.
How to Keep Reindeer Safe
Reindeer are often housed temporarily at farms, petting zoos, and garden centres during the winter months. With heights ranging from approximately 85 to 150 cm and the ability to jump between 210 and 500 cm, choosing a suitable enclosure is an important part of reindeer care.
A well-designed reindeer fence should be strong, secure, and tall enough to help prevent escapes. Reindeer also need enough space to move around, so providing a suitably sized enclosure is essential for their comfort and wellbeing.
A reliable fencing system typically consists of two key components: timber fence posts and wire netting.
Timber Posts
Timber posts, also known as cundy peeled posts, provide anchor points for wire fencing. Placing posts 3 metres apart for optimum performance and securing them by backfilling with soil, stones, or post mix creates the foundation for a sturdy perimeter.
These are available with a tanalised finish, or creosote finish to suit your needs.
Timber fence posts provide the support needed to create a sturdy wire fence. Installing posts approximately 3 metres apart helps establish a secure perimeter, while properly anchoring them with soil, stones, or post mix helps maintain stability.
First Fence timber posts are available with tanalised or creosoted finishes, allowing you to choose an option suited to your fencing requirements.
When building a reindeer fence, enclosure height is an important consideration. Due to reindeer's jumping abilities, a fence approximately 1.9 metres high is recommended for this type of enclosure. However, the appropriate height and design should be assessed based on the animals, site conditions, and specific containment requirements.
Of course, if the reindeer fly, you may need to reconsider your plan!
Wire Fence
Deer stock wire fencing is manufactured from high-tensile galvanised steel, offering a combination of strength, flexibility, and corrosion resistance.
Its tall profile and narrow wire spacing make it a practical option for creating a secure wire fence around reindeer enclosures. When installed correctly with suitable supporting posts, deer stock fencing can help reduce the risk of animals pushing through or escaping.
Beyond housing Santa's reindeer, deer stock fencing can also be used in agricultural, rural, and conservation settings where a durable perimeter is required.
