An end joining clip is a specialised fastener used to secure the ends of two deck boards that meet end-to-end over a single joist. This connection is often called a butt joint or butt seam. It is an important component because wood plastic composite deck boards, due to their tendency to expand and contract lengthwise with temperature changes, require specific support and gapping at this seam to prevent lifting, twisting or separating. A standard joining clip joins the side of one board to the side of the next over the joist; an end joining clip is designed specifically to stabilise and secure the two end cuts of different boards.
Securing Butt Joints: The primary purpose is to fasten the abutted ends of two separate deck boards to the same joist. This is necessary when the deck boards are shorter than the deck's length, requiring two boards to be joined.
Maintaining Gap Consistency (End-to-End): Unlike standard clips, which set the side-to-side gap, the end joining clip helps maintain the small, specific gap required between the two board ends (the butt joint gap), which is vital for thermal expansion and drainage.
Eliminating Extra Framing (Sister Joists): Traditionally, a butt joint required installing two joists side-by-side (sister joists) so that each board end had its own separate support and clip. Specialised end-joining clips are often designed with an extended profile or "wings" to span both boards and provide the necessary support over a single joist, simplifying the sub-structure and saving time/material.
Hidden Fastening: Like other hidden clip systems, the end joining clip locks into the side groove of the boards, ensuring the connection is secure without any visible fasteners on the deck surface.
