What are MUGAs?

A MUGA is a Multi Use Game Area, often installed in grassy areas to provide a smooth surface for playing sports and games.

Why have First Fence launched a range of MUGAs?

Scope: This range has been developed to support various sports and activities within a single, high-performance space, ideal for schools, parks, housing developments, and community centres.

Purpose: To inspire healthier, more active lifestyles by providing safe, inclusive environments where people of all ages and abilities can come together to play, train, and connect.

Intention: To deliver long-lasting, space-efficient outdoor solutions that maximise community use and encourage year-round participation in sport and recreation.

SAPCA Compliant: Rebound mesh panels at a minimum height of 3.0 metres are recommended in the ‘SAPCA Code of Practice for the Construction of Outdoor Multi Use Games Areas’.

How does this influence the design?

Multi-sport Compatibility: The system is designed with adaptable layouts, markings, and goal units to support a wide variety of sports, including football, basketball, tennis, and hockey, within a single enclosed space.

Inclusive Access: Entrances, surfacing options, and equipment have been designed to ensure usability by all age groups and abilities, with particular attention given to step-free access and wheelchair-friendly zones.

Durability for High Traffic Use: Materials and finishes have been selected to withstand frequent use and weather exposure, ensuring long-term performance in schoolyards, public parks, and urban developments.

Safety and Visibility: Fencing, rebound panels, and corner treatments have been developed to minimise injury risks and maintain clear visibility for both users and supervisors, enhancing safety without restricting play.

Compact and Efficient Layouts: Each unit is modular and space-conscious, maximising the use of limited land while ensuring that different sports can be played simultaneously or in rotation.

Low Maintenance Requirements: Finishes, coatings, and structural details are chosen to reduce upkeep, helping local authorities and schools manage long-term maintenance with minimal cost or disruption.

Variations

MUGAs can be installed with or without a gate. If you prefer without a gate, there will be a gap with an additional fence panel for added safety, so spectators don't feel the force of a flying ball.

Torque Bit Tool: Make installing your mesh fencing simple and secure by using a Torque Bit to fasten clamps and bolts firmly in place.

Mesh Fixing Kit: Designed to assist with both the installation and finishing touches of mesh fencing, our Mesh Fixing Kit includes everything you need: two torque bits, five mesh clips, five M8 x 40mm bolts, and a can of touch-up spray paint in your selected RAL colour.
