PG1 pedestrian guardrails are safety barriers designed to protect pedestrians by delineating walkways and preventing access to hazardous areas. These safety barriers comply with the British Standard BS 7818:1995, which specifies requirements for pedestrian restraint systems in metal used on roads and highways.
The BS 7818 standard ensures that pedestrian guard rails are structurally sound, durable, safe for public use and suitable for roadside and urban environments. Additionally, they should not obstruct visibility, detach upon impact, or pose a significant hazard to highway users.
First Fence offers two styles of these guard rail barriers; the difference between PG1 and PG2 pedestrian guard rails primarily lies in their infill design.
PG1 pedestrian guard rails feature infill bars that run from top to bottom of the panel. These offer excellent visibility and are ideal for standard pedestrian protection and for guiding foot traffic.
PG2 guard rails have the same infill bars, but there is an open sight section measuring 200mm deep across the full width at the top. PG2 is specifically designed to reduce visual obstruction for drivers, especially of small pedestrians and children. It offers superb visibility and hazard perception for drivers, allowing small children to be easily seen. When placed at a school gate opening, should a child run out onto the pavement, they will be met with a barrier that prevents them from running out into a road.
Staggered versions are available too. The staggering refers to the arrangement of the infill bars, which improves visibility for drivers. The vertical infill bars are offset or staggered between the front and back of the panels, this creates an alternating pattern when viewed head-on.
First Fence offers the PG1 pedestrian guard rails in kit form. The kit is available in a 0.5m, 1.0m and 2.0m format and with a standard infill or a single, double or triple stagger option. Select a galvanised finish or PPC in a range of RAL colours. This is a dig-in format and requires post mix for a strong installation.
This type of guard rail is ideal for pedestrian protection and directing flow along pavements, preventing unsafe crossings. They can create a safe boundary between children and traffic in school areas (PG2 is particularly helpful here). They can be used near bus stops to prevent sudden road crossings when boarding or exiting buses and on bridges or overpasses to prevent anyone from stepping into the path of traffic. They are ideal for installing along fast roads to act as road crossing deterrents.
We can supply pedestrian guard rails in a bolt-down format (not BS 7818 compliant), get in touch to discuss your requirements!
First Fence offers many types of roadside barriers including plastic barriers, metal crowd control barriers and concrete barriers. We also supply standard guard rails, speed ramps, wheel stops, verge posts and bollards. These products are designed to help minimise traffic and roadside incidents.
