Introducing Timber Knee Rail Fencing, a robust construction method employing the 'birdsmouth' jointing technique to create a durable and aesthetically pleasing structure. This fencing style showcases horizontal rails firmly supported by vertical posts, also recognised as birdsmouth, ascot, or diamond fencing in the industry.
Please note: Timber knee rails do not meet the specifications for highway use
The designation 'Knee Rail' stems from its deliberate placement at a low level around knee height, serving to demarcate boundaries while maintaining unobstructed sightlines. The birdsmouth joint, defined by a precise notch at the timber's end fitting onto the post, significantly helps structural integrity by maximising the connection between horizontal rails and vertical posts.
This fencing style predominantly utilises resilient, decay-resistant timber, making it well-suited for outdoor settings. Comprising top rails, birdsmouth posts, and secured with galvanised straps and nails, the assembly ensures a steadfast and enduring linkage between timber posts and rails. The installation process involves ground excavation.
The adaptability of Knee Rail Fencing allows for its application in diverse settings such as car parks, pathways, and walkways. While easily stepped over, it effectively delineates boundaries, dissuading trespassing on lawns or flower beds, and organises designated parking areas. Its cost-effectiveness positions it favourably for public spaces where heightened security is not the primary concern.
First Fence offers 3.6m long timber top rails designed for knee rail fencing. Fabricated from Tanalith E Green-treated timber, these top rails measure 3600mm in length with a 100 x 100mm section. A smaller 75 x 75mm version is also available, accompanied by premium knee rail fencing straps and birdsmouth posts tailored for this fencing style. The top rail is also available in a 1.8m length. The posts undergo thorough pressure treatment with Tanalith E Green, an environmentally suitable copper-based biocide product. Over time, exposed timber transforms from a pale green to a honey colour, eventually adopting a silvery grey hue. This timber knee rail fencing is supplied to First Fence by a reputable UK timber saw mill, produced from Norway Spruce and felled predominantly from North Wales (FSC certification is available upon request).
Engineered for in-ground installation, these posts need Post Mix for stability and durability, with a recommended installation interval of 1.8m post centre to post centre. Given the typical height of Knee Rail Fencing at 450 or 600mm, the suggested approach involves burying half the post length in the ground, using a minimum of 2 bags of post mix per post.
The Bishop's Hat style strap complements the 100 x 100mm top rail, due to an overhang on the Birdsmouth post, while the 75 x 75mm top rail requires the V or Shoe style straps.
While the timber posts undergo initial treatment, additional wood treatment, particularly at the ends, is advised to augment resilience and extend their lifespan.
