First Facts: What is Temporary Fencing?
A guide into what temporary fencing is, how it should be installed and the different options available in our temporary fencing range.

What is Temporary Fencing?

Temporary fencing is a versatile and portable boundary solution designed for short-term use in various settings. It is commonly used to create secure perimeters for construction sites, outdoor events, roadworks, and restricted access areas. Unlike permanent fencing, temporary fencing is easy to install and relocate, making it a practical choice for temporary projects.

Temporary Fencing At a Glance

Fully Removable- Designed to temporarily demark a boundary, property, walkway or event, without the permanent installation of a traditional fence.

Modular- Panels fix to adjacent panels, pedestrian gates or vehicle gates with easy-to-fix couplers, that can be fully removed after use and used again.

Flat Stack- 25 round top panels per pack and 30 square top panels per pack, ensuring easy transport, storage and assembly with minimal damage.

Budget vs strength- Available in two options: the Heavy Duty Round Top, featuring a single-piece frame made from ⌀38.1mm steel tubing, or the budget-friendly Square Top, designed with a ⌀38.1mm vertical frame and a ⌀25.4mm horizontal frame.

Top Tips for Temporary Fencing

  • Always ensure appropriate precautions have been taken for stabilisation. This includes, if needed, a temporary works design to ensure efficient stability of your system.
  • Follow installation guidance as described in BS EN 1722 Part 18

Temporary Fencing Terminology

What terms can you expect to hear when talking about temporary fencing?

Couplers- Used to connect panels to other panels or gates. Available in two types: standard couplers and anti-tamper couplers.

Feet- Thermoplastic or concrete, allows panels to free-stand.

Spanner- Fixing and removal of couplers for panels and gates. Available in two types: standard spanner for standard coupler and anti-tamper spanner for anti-tamper couplers.

Netting- Vented and flame retardant options for dust control, privacy or branding.

CHS Profile- Circular Hollow Section: the steel tube use on the panel.

Aperture- The opening between the mesh wire centres.

Stillage- Stillages are designed to keep panels of the same type contained in a pile for storage or transport.

Backstay- Stabilisation method for increased stability.

H&S Signage- Range of H & S signs that communicate warnings, risks and actions on site.

Kentledge- A form of weight applied to the backstay for stability. We have two sizes 390 kentledge block and 780 kentledge block.

Jockey Wheel- A wheel designed to support a gate leaf, allowing for ease of use over different terrains.

Gates- A method of securing entry for pedestrians and vehicles. We have a range of gates in different sizes available.

Installation methods For Temporary Fencing

Foot Installation- A typical quick installation method, with acceptable stability for flat ground and low wind speeds.

Timber / Steel Post Installation- Typically used in construction, in conjunction with UC class 4 treated timber posts.

Stabilisers- Often a cranked bar, backstay, tray and a form of weight (ballast, concrete or similar).

Triangle Stabiliser- An effective method of using two additional panels behind the fence for stabilisation.

Commonly asked Questions...

Are there gates to suit temporary fencing?

There are a range of gates available including pedestrian access gates (lockable with a digital combination lock), pedestrian swing gates (manufactured similarly to a panel) and vehicle gates.

Can you turn a panel into a gate?

Yes, there is a conversion kit for square top panels which allows the vertical frame of the fence panel to become the slam style of the gate.

Which stabilisation method is best?

Every method has a variety of benefits, and not one method will work for every site. It’s important to consult a structural engineer or Temporary Works Design on the correct method for your specific site.

Can I hire temporary fencing?

Temporary fencing is tough and durable, making it ideal for being reused time and time again. First Fence offers hire on all temporary fencing.

Can I prevent unauthorised removal?

Temporary fencing comes with a range of compatible accessories, including anti-lift devices to prevent removal. Use of a security and anti-tamper coupler is also recommended to prevent unauthorised access.

Can my temporary fence be powder coated?

Upon request, temporary fencing can be powder coated. It’s often quicker and more cost effective to purchase custom vented sheeting instead, as this can be re used time and time again.

Can you hire temporary fencing?

Yes, temporary fencing is available for hire. Renting is a cost-effective option for short-term projects like construction sites, events, or emergencies.
