Timber Railway Sleepers Retaining Wall
23 February, 2024

Contractor – Newgate Civil Engineering

Location – Stevenage

Project – Timber Railway Sleepers Retaining Wall

Overview:

Newgate Civil Engineering were looking for an alternative to normal fencing around their premises and were looking to build a retaining wall around the area instead.

Challenges:

Aesthetics – As the area was a company premises, they wanted the final project to look professional and showcase their business.

Installation – They wanted to install themselves, so wanted to make sure the solution was easy to install without the need of experience fitters.

Durability – They needed an outdoor solution that was suitable for all weather conditions, and provided a long-lasting option that would stand for years to come.

Maintenance – Due to the business setting, they wouldn’t have time to always inspect or maintain a fence line, so wanted something that would need minimal upkeep.

Solution:

After looking at our range of fencing that would have worked, from composite to timber, they decided to create a retaining wall from railway sleepers.

Timber railway sleepers would offer a slightly different, natural solution that would be a great visual addition to their premises. As the sleepers are already pre-treated in accordance to industry standard BS EN 251-1 they would just need a check or inspection every so often, rather than consistent maintenance, making them the ideal solution for Newgate Civil Engineering.

By meeting these standards, the railway sleepers are high quality and the treatment can help tackle the damaging effects of rot and expand the life expectancy of the timber, providing the company with a durable solution that can withstand outdoor weather conditions.

Creating a retaining wall out of railway sleepers is relatively simple to do, given the right tools and instructions, meaning there isn’t always a requirement for experienced fitters. Railway sleepers enabling the company to create a visually appealing retaining wall around their premises, adding that extra finish to their property that can withstand the test of time.
