What this means for you:
Key design considerations promoted by RoSPA include:
An ambulance requires an opening of at least 2.15m
Where possible don't have gates that open directly onto a hazard such as a road or open water
Gates should be a minimum of 1m open width to allow passage of wheelchairs
Gates should open outward where possible as dogs find it easier to push than pull it
Gates should ideally not close any quicker than 5 seconds to prevent striking the back of a child and to provide easier acccess for wheelchair users
A minimum gap width of 12mm between posts to prevent finger entrapment
Rubber stops t least 12mm thick on the gate slam plates
Clearance of between 60mm and 110mm between the bottom of the gate and the ground to reduce foot injuries
Gates should ideally be a different colour to the fencing to help the visually impaired
