For both day labourers and skilled labourers, safety is a major concern. Accidents occur regularly in the construction industry each year, and many of them are caused by the lack of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) or the failure to wear the PPE issued. PPE is personal protective equipment that protects employees from health and safety hazards on the job. When engineering and administrative controls are not feasible or efficient in reducing these risks to appropriate levels, the goal is to minimise employee exposure to hazards.
PPE includes items such as protective helmets, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, safety footwear, safety harnesses and respiratory protective equipment. First Fence is very excited to share with you the news that we’ve introduced a new range of PPE products from JSP. These products are imperative for protecting yourself and your employees in the workplace, and the purpose of our new range of PPE is to reduce employee exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries.
Let’s explore some PPE commonly used on construction sites and their benefit:
Hard hats are common on construction sites. Just passing by a site, you can usually identify workers by their hard hats. They are designed to protect against flying or falling objects that would otherwise impact or penetrate the worker. Some hard hats are equipped with accessories such as face shields and earmuffs. Hard hats should be well-fitted; those that are too large or too small are inappropriate for use.

This helmet has a strong shell which protects against a variety of different environments and applications. It has a mid-peak and a variety of safety features, such as an adjustment harness system and a wheel ratchet, which ensure safety and comfort.
This helmet has a feature where you can flick a switch to make it suitable for ground level – that meets standard EN397, or if you flick a switch down, it meets the height standards for EN12492. It is a robust ABS shell and is designed for superior protection.
A light, full shell bump cap that is an innovative and lightweight product, but also meets the safety requirements for EN812. It is a great option for the summer as it allows workers to work in something more comfortable and lighter than a helmet.
Respiratory protection is vital on sites where toxic substances are present. Sometimes what you can’t see can hurt you. Respiratory protections like respirators are designed to protect you from dust, fumes, paint spray, pesticides and other dangerous substances that could cause permanent impairment. Respiratory protection should be used in environments with air contaminants. In work environments, respirators are relied upon when adequate ventilation is unavailable or other engineering control systems are not feasible or inadequate.

This half mask offers superior lower breathing resistance and incorporates a 4-point suspension harness with quick-release buckles. The mask accepts the press to check filters and therefore protects against gases and vapours.
PressToCheck is the easiest way to face-fit check the seal of your respirator, every time you put it on. Features a built-in inhalation valve, making the respirator easier to maintain. Low-profile cover protects the enclosed pleated filter from moisture and foreign objects that could damage the pleats. Face-fit testing is reassuring with PressToCheck filters; you can instantly check that you have the correct seal every time you put your mask on before entering a hazard zone.
Eye and face protection are equally important as head protection. Safety goggles, spectacles and full face shields can give you the protection needed for the eyes and face. Metal work, woodwork, hot work and air-tool operations all require this type of protection. General labourers can also benefit from safety goggles since there is usually debris on construction sites.

The Stealth 9000 is a lightweight safety spectacle, weighing just 25g, with a wraparound 9 base curve polycarbonate lens. This item is great for day-to-day use and offers good health and safety whilst remaining light and comfortable.
The Evo Guard is a high-performance industrial visor that provides facial coverage without limiting movement whilst in use. The features and benefits of this visor are that they are compatible with a variety of different products, such as Half Masks, Glasses, Helmets and Ear Defenders.
Industrial noise is often discounted as an occupational hazard since it isn’t visible. However, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, about 82% of occupational hearing loss cases occurred among workers in the manufacturing sector. Hearing Protection is used to reduce the noise levels that employees are exposed to to prevent hearing loss.

The Sonis 1 ear defenders have been built and designed to protect high decibel settings and therefore can withstand noises of up to 26 Decibels. The ear defenders also have adjustable steel arms and therefore can facilitate an even distribution of pressure, and the wearer can tilt and adjust the position of the earcup to remain comfortable and fitted.
The Sonis compact ear defenders can withstand noises of up to 32 decibels. Comfort is important for ear defenders, and therefore, this has an over-moulded headband that has a built-in comfort area with ventilation.
