When Does Concrete Need to be Reinforced?

When working with concrete is difficult to know what reinforcement method is best. Without reinforcement, concrete doesn't stand up properly, cracks and crumbles under high pressure. When using concrete in different situations you need to work out what would be the best reinforcement method to use that will be cost-efficient. Making sure you choose the right reinforcement first time is very important, saves time and hassle of having to replace it after a few years due to cracks. Be aware that certain materials are required for certain projects under building regulations.

The Main Types of Concrete Reinforcement are:

  • Steel fabric Mesh
  • Rebar
  • Chicken wire
  • Fibres

Here are a few suggestions for different projects and which reinforcement method to use Driveway due to heavy traffic its recommended that you use rebar and wire mesh together for extra reinforcement. For Swimming pools depending on the area, you could be required to use rebar or mesh or both. Patio use Wire mesh and rebar can do the job. The budget may be the deciding factor on which to use for this type of a project. Retaining wall wire mesh is the best to provide strength.

Steel Fabric Mesh Reinforcement

Steel Fabric Mesh Reinforcement Sheets are designed to be immersed into the concrete while the concrete is setting allowing for stresses to be transmitted between the two materials, therefore, reinforcing the concrete, increasing the overall strength of the structure and assisting in the control of cracking. At First Fence we currently sell this fabric mesh in 3 different types; A style - Square Fabric Mesh, B style - Structural Fabric Mesh and D style - Wrapping Fabric Mesh. Each type has a range of sizes and dimensions. All available in Standard 4800mm x 2400mm Sheets. Please note that theses Mesh Sheets are only available in packs and are not sold individually.

A Style Steel Reinforcement Mesh

A style steel reinforcing Mesh sheets are all 200mm x 200mm Square Wire varying from 5mm thick up to 10mm thick bar. The cross-section thicknesses on this type of Mesh Sheet are uniform. A style mesh is mainly used where the same area of reinforcement is required in both directions typically in slabs and walls and are the most widely used welded fabric.

B Style Steel Reinforcement Mesh

B style steel reinforcing Mesh are all 100mm x 200mm Rectangular Wire varying from 5mm thick up to 12mm thick bar. The cross-section thicknesses on this type of Mesh Sheet vary.

B style mesh is mainly used where the main reinforcement is in one direction.

D Style Steel Reinforcement Mesh

D style steel reinforcing Mesh is 100mm x 100mm Square Wire with 2.5mm thick bars. The cross-section thicknesses on this type of Mesh Sheet are uniform. D style mesh it mainly used for fire protection and for links in beam cages.
