Sleeper Retainers, RSJs (Rolled Steel Joists), I Beams or H Beams, are a very common type of beam used in structural steelwork. Due to the flexibility of their use, they are also known as Universal Beams.
The shape of the metal beam makes it ideal as a Sleeper Retainer for all kinds of construction and garden projects when combined with Railway Sleepers. Their immensely sturdy build means they are effective for retaining walls, raised flower beds, embankments and structural support. Retaining walls are designed to hold back soil and prevent erosion on slopes, by using Sleeper Retainers and Sleepers you can create a sturdy and attractive wall.
Railway Sleepers and Sleeper Retainers can significantly enhance a garden by providing both structural support and adding a rustic charm, transforming the outdoor space into an aesthetically pleasing and functional area.
Each of these Sleeper Retainers is made from galvanised steel which gives excellent protection from the negative action of the elements and damage thus ensuring the longevity of the retaining structure. Anything in permanent outdoor use must be able to put up with a lot so this is a great product to use. Steel provides superior strength when compared to a concrete or wooden post therefore steel posts are a long-term solution for retaining walls.

With our RSJ Sleeper Retainers and Railway Sleepers, the possibilities for enhancing your garden and landscaping projects are truly endless. Whether you envision raised garden beds, sturdy retaining walls, pathway borders, or even garden furniture, our products offer the perfect solution. Here's some guidance on how to use our Sleeper Retainer RSJ posts.
Depending on what you use you’re the Sleeper Retainers for, the installation process may differ. Before beginning your project, carefully consider the purpose and desired outcome. For raised garden beds and retaining walls, ensure the RSJ sleeper retainers are firmly anchored into the ground at appropriate intervals. When constructing pathway borders or garden furniture, proper alignment and secure connections between the RSJ Retainers and Railway Sleepers are important for achieving stability.
It is advised that when constructing a retaining wall or flower bed, the steel RSJ is dug in 50% of the total height of the bed, so if your wall is to be 80cm high the post should be dug in 40cm making the 1200mm RSJ sleeper retainer beam ideal.
If you need to cut your galvanised steel beam, various methods can be employed including using band saws, angle grinders or oxy acetylene set-ups. Be sure to measure before you cut and use appropriate PPE and sensible precautions. These beams are available in a variety of lengths, so make your calculations and order the appropriate size and then cutting will not be necessary!
To secure your steel beam into the ground, a product like Post Mix is recommended. Two bags should be sufficient per post, however this is a guideline, please take advice from a professional to ensure your construction is safe. The two holes denote the bottom the post and this end should be dug into the ground.
To prolong its life it is a good idea to paint metal fixings with a good quality outdoor metal paint.
